UNSDSN released a new report ‘The Europe Sustainable Development Report 2025’ in late January 2025. With the new European Union (EU) leadership (including the European Commission, Parliament and Council of the EU) established for 2024–2029, the report presents a report and updated database identifying Europe’s SDG challenges and priorities.
The report assesses SDG progress in 41 states (including all 27 EU member states, 9 EU candidate countries, 4 European Free Trade Agreement countries, and the United Kingdom), showing a lag from 2020–2023 compared to 2016–2019. It identifies Europe's continuing environmental and biodiversity challenges, particularly related to SDG 2 and sustainable food and land systems. This year's ESDR is accompanied by a new study with the European Economic and Social Committee. The study emphasizes prioritizing demand-side measures, especially dietary shifts for sustainable agri-food systems and improved health outcomes. The report also outlines four overarching priorities for the new EU leadership to accelerate SDG implementation in the region over the 2024–2029 period.
