Navigating Identity: Education and Healthcare for the Transgender Community

Forum Description:

This forum will explore the challenges and support for the transgender community in education and healthcare. Professor Diana Kwok will share research studies and a counselling case on how a student disclosing one's transgender identity in secondary school, highlighting the support from teachers, school social workers, and parents. Dr Zephyrus Tsang, a transgender male doctor, will share his personal journey of growing up in Hong Kong, and how he was able to embark on his life during his final year studying at CUHK. He will also delve into the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare. As we face an increasing number of anti-rights movements that threaten these fundamental values globally, it is crucial to recognize that equal rights and dignity for all individuals are integral to achieving sustainable development.

This talk is highly relevant to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Speakers

Dr KWOK Kan, Diana is Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education and Counselling, the Education University of Hong Kong. Dr Kwok is a registered social worker, sex therapist, expressive arts therapist, mental health counsellor, and approved counselor supervisor. She used to work in school, family, mental health, and LGBT service settings, in Hong Kong, and in the United States. She provides professional training and clinical supervision to social workers, counsellors, and mental health practitioners on sexuality education, and sexual/gender diversity counseling in universities, NGOs, and government organizations. Dr Kwok’s research interest focuses on sexual and transgender prejudice, the lived experiences of marginalized students, such as SEN, SOGI population (LGBQ+/transgender), and ethnic groups.

Dr TSANG Ling Yin, Zephyrus (he/him), is a transgender male doctor in Hong Kong. He is the Co-founder and Co-director of Quarks, the first and by far the only organization targeting transgender youth in Hong Kong. He is also the member of the Steering Committee of the Hong Kong LGBT Medical Society. He has a passion for connecting the transgender community, and promoting gender diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare.


Moderator

Professor Amos P. K. Tai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at CUHK, also serving concurrently as the Associate Director of Office of University General Education. Amos obtained his B.Sc. from MIT, Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from Harvard, and was a Croucher Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT before he joined CUHK in 2013. His research focuses on atmospheric chemistry and physics, ecoclimatology, and sustainable agriculture and forestry. Amos is also a passionate educator, having received the prestigious CUHK Vice-Chancellor Exemplary Teaching Award and Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award. Amos delights in promoting science, environmental and sustainability education for the general public, regularly giving talks in schools and public avenues and participating in many TV and radio programs. He has provided professional consulting services to various government departments, and currently serves as a Board Governor of Friends of the Earth (Hong Kong).
