The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (the Museum) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) launched the ‘Responsible Consumption and Waste Reduction Exhibition’ at its Hong Kong Jockey Club Green Gallery on 3 May 2019 (Friday). Officiating at the launch ceremony were Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, and Miss Donna Tang, Executive Manager, Charities (Grant Making – Sports and Environment) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.
According to the report ‘Monitoring of Solid Waste in Hong Kong’, published by the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government in December 2018, over 5.7 million tonnes of waste are generated every year in Hong Kong, of which almost 70% ends up in landfills. The brand new exhibition at the Museum’s Hong Kong Jockey Club Green Gallery presents major initiatives of The Hong Kong Jockey Club that have helped pioneer new thinking on how to protect the environment in the local community. With the aid of multimedia interactive exhibits, the exhibition promotes United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production – and aims to inspire the visitors to get involved in waste-reduction action and to live a green lifestyle.
In his welcome address, Professor Fok said, ‘CUHK and the Club have been collaborating closely to promote environmental protection in the community. With the generous support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change was established at CUHK in 2013. The Museum, through regularly updating its exhibits and organizing a wide variety of environmental education activities, is committed to engaging the public in climate action.’
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is dedicated to protecting the environment through innovative ideas and enhancing the sustainability of society through cross-sectorial collaborations. Apart from working hand-in-hand with CUHK to establish the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change, the Club funded ‘JC–CUHK Climate Action’ in 2017 to promote nature conservation among Hong Kong citizens, as well as supported the launch of the Hong Kong chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Hong Kong) in 2018 and has since been co-hosting the chapter with CUHK to encourage cross-sectorial collaborations and promote the 17 SDGs in Hong Kong.
