The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (the Museum) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hong Kong chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Hong Kong) jointly organised the ‘Plastic China and Start Small, Start Now: Screening and Forum’, on 13 April 2019 (Saturday). The event falls under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Forum Series and is one of the activities of the ‘JC–CUHK Climate Action’. Officiating at the event were Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, and Ms Vivian Lee, Senior Charities Manager of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.
The multi-award-winning documentary Plastic China, produced by CNEX Foundation, reveals the devastating impact of the enormous plastic treatment business in China, and its threats to the environment, society and public health. Start Small, Start Now, filmed by Photo Escapes, together with a local environmental group, Eco Drive Hong Kong, looks into the plastic waste problem in Hong Kong and demonstrates how individual action and behavioural change can make a difference.
A forum moderated by Prof. Chu Lee-man, Associate Professor of the School of Life Sciences of CUHK was held after the screening. Ms Ruby Chen, CEO and Co-founder of CNEX Foundation and Producer of Plastic China, Ms Angela Cheng, Co-founder of Eco Drive Hong Kong, and Mr Edwin Lau, Founder and Executive Director of The Green Earth, shared with the audience their thoughts on the plastic waste problem, the challenges facing the recycling industry, and how individuals can alleviate the plastic waste problem effectively to fulfil the United Nations’ SDGs.
To increase public awareness of the importance of waste reduction and management, the Museum launched the first-ever, school-based Waste Reduction Project under ‘JC–CUHK Climate Action’ in 2017. An award ceremony was held during the event to recognise the outstanding performance of partner schools and students in waste reduction in the past year.
