The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, SDSN Hong Kong co-host, supported five Jockey Club Scholars and Fellows (our scholarship and fellowship recipients) to join UNLEASH, a global innovation lab, held in Singapore in June 2018. UNLEASH gathers more than 1,000 talented individuals annually to collaborate on solutions to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Every year until the culmination of the 2030 Agenda, UNLEASH will be held in a new country. The SDGs will be explored through the lens of the host country, examining the local way of living, thinking and working to ignite discussion and unlock new perspectives.
This year, the participants went through a facilitated process of innovation, uniquely tailored by UNLEASH and Deloitte. They formed teams to explore real-life challenges under the eight SDG themes: (1) Food, (2) Health, (3) Education and Information and Communications Technology (ICT), (4) Water, (5) Energy, (6) Urban Sustainability, (7) Responsible Supply Chain and Consumption, and (8) Climate Action. The themes were explored from multiple angles, before the participants defined specific problems and developed preliminary solutions. The solutions were tested and refined with leading experts and company partners.
At the end of this rapid-fire innovation process, each team drafted an SDG solution, implementation plan, and presentation to prepare for their pitch. The teams then headed off to the market place, taking part in Ecosperity, where outside guests could see the solutions and offer their support. Five winners were picked to receive special awards and to pitch their solution to all the attendees at the end of the event.
